Licks Attorneys occupies a unique position amongst Brazilian firms, at the intersection between IP, regulation and health. For example, such expertise lends itself remarkably when representing patent holders facing the challenges of compulsory licensing. The firm represents all current patent holders of medicines for Covid-19 treatment in compulsory licensing processes in the country.

Licks Attorneys has acted on behalf of ICT (information and communication technologies) patent owners in every single litigation filed in Brazil this year, representing global companies in IP complex technology cases like DivX against Samsung, which resulted in a global patent licensing agreement just a few weeks after obtaining a preliminary injunction on behalf of the client.

Licks Attorneys is also the most active firm in IP policy making in the country, with clients ranging from global companies to trade associations and international organizations such as WIPO. Before starting in private law, Otto Licks worked for the Brazilian government supporting Itamaraty in the implementation of the WTO-TRIPS Agreement. During this time, he worked with two other partners, Ambassador Regis Arslanian (retired), then the main negotiator for bilateral and multilateral IP issues, and Nuno Carvalho - who, after leaving the Brazilian government, joined the TRIPs Secretariat of the WTO, going on to a long career at WIPO.
