Peter Perkowski is the founder of Perkowski Legal, PC and a nationally recognized practitioner in intellectual property law, with extensive experience in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and right-of-publicity matters. Mr. Perkowski has advised clients and litigated high-profile cases for nearly 20 years, beginning at a Los Angeles entertainment powerhouse and continuing at two top international law firms.
Mr. Perkowski's practice serves the legal needs of businesses and individuals in the creative-cultural industries–arts and entertainment, music, sports, publishing, research and development, tech and biotech, advertising, fashion and design, toys and games, medicine, and education–from contracts and counseling to deals and disputes. This includes assisting clients with transactional matters–including copyright and trademark registration, license negotiations and other contracts–and representing clients in all litigation phases, from pre-suit investigation, cease-and-desist enforcement, infringement defense, pre-trial, trial, and appeal.
Mr. Perkowski has had tremendous success in the courtroom, litigating a wide range of intellectual property actions in state and federal courts across the country. His significant cases include copyright disputes related to the James Bond and Spider-Man movie franchises and the Reginald Denny beating video; trade secret disputes between competitors in the sports-apparel and video-game-programming industries; and disputes involving television and film contracts. He was also a member of the Disney trial team in Katzenberg v. Disney, a well-publicized dispute involving the valuation of some of Disney's best-known intellectual property. He has appeared in litigation matters for the ownership group of a local baseball franchise, has consulted on publicity-rights matters involving Olympic athletes and other celebrities, and advised on a trademark matter for a local professional soccer team.
Mr. Perkowski frequently lectures to audiences across the U.S. on intellectual property issues, and he teaches Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport in the Graduate Program in Sports Management at California State University, Long Beach. His work and achievements have been widely acclaimed: he was recognized by the National LGBT Bar Association as among the "Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40," has been frequently cited in Thomson Reuters's Super Lawyers magazine, and was listed four times in the IAM Patent 1000. This is the fourth time Managing Intellectual Property has named Mr. Perkowski an IP Star–twice before in California, and once in the entire U.S.
Mr. Perkowski received his J.D. from the George Washington University Law School, an M.A. in Kinesiology (Sport Management option) from Cal State Long Beach, and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester in New York.
