(PALO ALTO/SAN FRANCISCO – December 16, 2019) Squire Patton Boggs is pleased to announce the appointment of partner Janice Rice to Deputy Practice Group Leader of the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group, leading the life and health sciences patent team. Ms. Rice will succeed Cameron Kerrigan, who founded the practice. Mr. Kerrigan will continue to be a partner in the practice group in the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices.

“Cameron has been dedicated to the founding and growth of the group for almost 20 years. Without him, we would not have a globally recognized life and health sciences patent practice. We thank him for his hard work and leadership,” said David S. Elkins, global chair of the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group. “And we are very confident that Janice will successfully continue Cameron’s hard work. She has excelled in her practice, business development and acumen, and has the skills necessary to excel as Deputy Practice Group Leader.”

Ms. Rice has been a patent lawyer for more than 16 years in the California community. For more than 12 years of that time, she served as in-house patent counsel at small to mid-sized pharmaceutical companies. Before law school, Ms. Rice worked for nine years as a synthetic organic chemist. Using her knowledge of chemistry and law, Ms. Rice’s practice includes developing US and international patent strategies, patent drafting and prosecution, evaluation and protection of trade secrets, patentability and freedom to operate analyses, patent due diligence and advising on intellectual property licensing issues.

“I am extremely proud of the strength of the Squire Patton Boggs life sciences group, and in particular, our unwavering focus on providing strategic business advice and on quality service to our clients. It is an honor to be part of such a strong team,” said Ms. Rice.

Moving forward in the role, Ms. Rice plans to continue to strengthen the business development practices of the group, bring her corporate experience to continue to build a strong team atmosphere for colleagues around the globe, and to continue the firm’s commitment to foster the growth of each individual and encouragement of women in particular, to take risks and follow their intuition.
