Kirkland & Ellis
Kirkland & Ellis today announced the hire of Allen & Overy’s head of IP and well-known patent litigator Nicola Dagg. She will join the firm’s London office as partner in the autumn. When asked if anyone will be moving with Dagg, Allen & Overy’s spokesperson said: “I can confirm only Nicola is leaving.” This news is indeed a loss for Allen & Overy considering that in 2016 the firm hired a number of IP partners from Simmons & Simmons. However, the impact of Dagg’s departure is yet to be seen as she leaves behind an IP practice with a team of highly regarded IP lawyers. Dagg was among the 19 UK practitioners featured in Managing IP’s Top 250 Women in IP. Her colleague Marjan Noor also made the list.
J A Kemp
In its press release the firm said it has relocated its Cambridge office to a “larger, more modern premises on Capital Park”. It also confirmed that four attorneys will be joining the Cambridge team in the next few months. The new address is CPC2 Building, Capital Park, Cambridge, CB21 5XE.
Arochi & Lindner
The firm hired María Ángeles Moreno from Herrero & Asociados. Moreno specialises in trade mark protection and management work. She is based in the firm’s office in Madrid. Arochi & Lindner is not currently ranked in Spain.
HGF
HGF continues to make its presence felt in Europe with the launch of a new office in Westport, a town in the west coast of Ireland. The new office will be led by life sciences patent attorney Craig Thomson, who joined the firm last year. The firm said this was a “strategic move” and the location was “chosen to capitalise on investments in the life sciences sector and be in close proximity to Galway, a globally recognised hub for MedTech innovations”. No doubt some commentators will say Brexit may have played a part in it. In 2016 UK IP firm Keltie opened an office in Galway. The firm recently promoted Kieran Killough (Manchester) and Susan Keston (Glasgow) to partner.
Bardehle Pagenberg
The firm reported that its managing partner Peter K Hess passed away on April 30 after a serious illness. Hess was one of the IP stars in Germany. Managing IP offers condolences to Hess’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
Santarelli
Former EPO employee Alfred Spigarelli has joined the firm as of Counsel. Spigarelli held senior management positions within the EPO and was involved in substantive changes to patent procedures at the office. The firm believes that his experience will enhance its patent strategy advice to clients.
Pinsent Masons
This firm hired Ann Henry as partner to launch its new office in Ireland. Henry was previously a partner at Phillip Lee where she dealt with IP, particularly soft IP, general commercial disputes and data protection.
DWF
The firm brought in Marco Annoni to set up an IP practice in Italy. Annoni, who was previously with Carnelutti, joins as partner and head of department with trainee Valerie Balassiano.
Lewis Silkin
Lewis Silkin acquired Adslogans, a specialist marketing slogan search service provider. The company assists brand owners and marketing agencies clear straplines, slogans and catchphrases before launching new campaigns. The service has been integrated into Lewis Silkin’s trade mark practice, with Adslogans director Katherine Jones now part of the team.
AMERICAS
Antequera Parilli & Rodriguez
Antequera Parilli & Rodriguez and Markven Propiedad Intelectual have merged and operate under the former’s name. Before the merger Markven Propiedad Intelectual, which specialises in trade mark, was not ranked by IP STARS in Venezuela. Its founder Barbarita Guzman joins Antequera Parilli & Rodriguez as partner.
FisherBroyles
The firm welcomed John Eisenhart, Elizabeth Haanes, James W Hill, Keats Quinalty and Cara Crowley-Weber as partners in its patent prosecution practice. Eisenhart joined from Nixon Vanderhye. His patent prosecution practice covers computer software and telecommunications. Haanes, who joined from Thompson Coburn, specialises in life sciences. Hill was previously with Perkins Coie and his practice covers medical devices and life sciences. Former USPTO examiner Quinalty joined from Womble Bond Dickinson, while Crowley-Weber joins from Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. Eisenhart and Haanes will be based in Washington DC whereas the rest will be based in other locations.
Marks & Clerk
Marks & Clerk and Sim & McBurney and Sim Ashton & McKay have merged to operate under the name Marks & Clerk Canada. The merger bolsters Marks & Clerk’s presence and IP offering, which now includes legal services, in the country.
