Theuns Van De Merwe started his career in intellectual property law in 2007, and has, for the past 15 years, been handling a full spectrum of IP matters for some of the largest businesses in the world from a wide range of industry sectors. From his roots at one of the largest IP law firms in the Southern Hemisphere, he moved on to managing the Qatar office of Cedar White Bradley, and later joined the Dubai office of the firm, where he currently practices.
Theuns has been nominated as co-preferred counsel for the world’s leading hospitality group – he he manages their MENA trademark portfolio and offers advice on strategy, enforcement, licensing, branding and marketing, and dispute resolution undertakings in the region.
Theuns has also assisted a U.S. law firm with the Global Trade Mark Report Card, submitted to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. Patent and Trade Mark Office and other agencies of the U.S. government. The contribution covered 22 countries, and focused on well-known trademarks, landlord liability for trade mark infringement, statutory damage claims, and border measures against counterfeits.
