Laura Easton is a Senior Associate in Smart & Biggar's Calgary office. A skilled intellectual property lawyer, Laura has a talent for finding practical solutions to complex problems. Laura’s litigation practice is focused primarily on patent, trademark and copyright litigation, together with litigation surrounding misappropriation of confidential information or trade secrets. Laura also advises clients with respect to the selection, prosecution, and enforcement of their trademarks, and the protection of their confidential information.
Laura has appeared before the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, all levels of the Alberta courts, the British Columbia Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. She has also appeared before the Trademarks Opposition Board and the Alberta Surface Rights Board, and has represented clients in private arbitration.
In addition to her litigation practice, Laura counsels brand owners on trademark selection, clearance, prosecution, use and enforcement, and also represents clients on opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademarks Opposition Board.
Laura counsels Canadian and international clients on intellectual property matters across a broad range of industries, with a particular emphasis in oil and gas. Laura focuses on understanding her clients’ respective businesses and industries in order to create strategies tailored to best serve her clients’ individualized needs.
Before joining Smart & Biggar, Laura practiced in the Calgary litigation group of a large global law firm, where she had a broad practice with an emphasis on commercial litigation, oil and gas, and employment law. Her diverse legal experience helps her assess her clients’ IP concerns within the context of the industry, the market and the larger business picture.
