Mr. Merkel is a German and European patent and trademark attorney, certified to practice before the Unitary Patent Court. He has been working in the field of intellectual property rights since 2010.
As a true IP nerd and passionate problem solver, Benjamin is a highly experienced and accomplished attorney in the field of patents as well as trademarks. His ability to quickly and holistically analyse technical and legal issues enables him to develop target-oriented solutions, even under difficult conditions. He is particularly effective in involving and advising decision-makers thanks to his special understanding of economic interrelationships and clear, understandable language. Benjamin advises clients in the fields of renewable energy, waste and recycling plant technology, consumer goods and household appliances, cleaning machines and technical cleanliness, RNA delivery systems, and the automotive supply industry. He also has in-depth knowledge of defense land systems. Besides drafting and obtaining technical IP rights, Mr. Merkel has extensive experience in defending and enforcing IP rights, in particular in opposition and appeal proceedings, as well as in cross-border infringement and nullity proceedings. A further focus of his work is strategic consulting and support of international trademark portfolios for corporate groups.
Benjamin Merkel studied nanostructure technology at the University of Wuerzburg and the University of Toronto with a focus on electronics, photonics and biophysical applications. After graduating, he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research, inter alia, on a project to produce a bio-resorbable implant. Mr. Merkel has been working in the field of intellectual property rights since 2010. As part of his training as a patent attorney and in addition to the mandatory training programs, he completed an internship in a law firm specialized in intellectual property rights in Singapore.
