We are delighted to announce that we have published the 2017 rankings of the top firms for copyright work in 51 jurisdictions. Congratulations to all the firms listed.

This is the third and final instalment of the firm rankings resulting from our research, following the publication of the trade mark and patent tables in February and March respectively. Please use the navigation bar to view all the 2017 rankings under each region.

What’s new

The copyright tables this year cover more countries than ever before. New countries include Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Ireland, Russia, Turkey, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates. The US national rankings can be found under 'Americas'.

Firms are ranked alphabetically in tiers or as ‘Recommended’. The total number of firms listed, as well as the number of tiers, varies by jurisdiction. For some smaller countries we consider all practice areas and rank firms under "Intellectual Property".

Still to come

The 2017 state-by-state firm rankings under ‘United States', the 2017 Stars (i.e. Trade Mark Stars, Top 250 Women in IP, Corporate Stars) and the 2017 firm ranking editorials for Trade Mark/Copyright will be published next month in the 2017 edition of IP Stars Handbook. Until then, the version in the 2016 edition will remain on this website.

Two new IP Stars Handbooks will be published in May: Trade Mark and Copyright (Global) and IP Stars United States edition, which contains all the rankings, editorials and Stars lists for the US. IP Stars Patent Handbook (Global) will be published in June.

Managing IP subscribers receive copies of the handbooks, and we will make some available at certain events we attend including the
INTA Annual Meeting in Barcelona next month. If you have any enquiries about the handbooks please get in touch with the contacts listed below.

The contents of the handbooks will be uploaded online in the next two months.

The research for the 2018 rankings and individual listings will start in September 2017.

Research methodology

IP Stars rankings are based on extensive research carried out over a six-month period, starting from September each year. Our team of research analysts in London, New York and Hong Kong obtained information from firms and their clients through interviews, emails and online surveys. Our researchers also reviewed publicly available information as well as existing data we hold on firms. Among the attributes assessed are: strength of the firm’s IP team, workload, outcomes achieved for clients and track record.

For copyright, researchers assessed non-contentious work (including licensing and general advisory) and disputes. The firms in the top-tier are those we reasonably believe have dedicated specialists who advise rights holders across the copyright-based industries (from publishing and arts to digital content including software) on cutting edge issues in copyright and related rights.

The copyright rankings are based on information available when the research was concluded in February 2017. All our rankings will remain unchanged until we publish new rankings in 2018. Any subsequent developments such as firm name changes will be reflected in this year’s handbooks or, where appropriate, in real time on this website.

IP Stars research is conducted rigorously and impartially, and there is no cost to participate. Firms cannot vote or pay for their own inclusion, nor can they solicit votes from associates. For m
ore information see here.
