Carlota Viola has worked in IP litigation for 14 years, following a Master’s in Intellectual Property Law from the Max Planck Institute in Munich in 2007. She began her career at IP boutique firm Grau & Angulo in 2008 in the Barcelona office. worked throughout 2016 in the IP department of one of the world’s most important fashion retail companies, advising on different IP topics, including assignment and licence agreements and trademarks and other IP rights clearance. She became a partner at Grau & Angulo in 2018.
Ms Viola’s practice focuses on trademarks, industrial design, copyright and unfair competition. She has vast experience in representing and defending well-known brands in the fashion, luxury goods and perfume sectors in cases relating to counterfeiting and infringement, and in helping them to develop suitable strategies. She has been closely involved in conducting several EU-wide court actions against smell-alike perfumes, all of which have been successful and commanded important damages awards. Ms Viola is frequently invited to speak as an expert on this and other topics, in Spain and abroad, by professional associations such as the Association of Trademark and Design Law Practitioners and UNIFAB (the French association of manufacturers for the defence of IP rights). She also regularly writes for international law publications on IP litigation matters.
