Research is now underway for the 2023 edition of IP STARS rankings and Managing IP Awards programme. We are no longer accepting firm submissions, but we are still conducting market feedback interviews and surveys and processing the documents of firms that submitted on time.

Firms that did not submit this year should prepare and focus on submitting for the 2024 edition next year. We do not accept submissions via email. Read about our research and submissions process here.

Below is a snapshot of what to expect. Please note that the dates may change.

Research timeline

August: We will send out an email with details on how to participate in the research for the next edition

September 1: We start accepting firm submissions, conducting independent research and scheduling market interviews

October 31: Firm questionnaire and client referees submission deadline*

December 2022 - March 2023: Client referee feedback and senior IP practitioner surveys**

July: End of the research for the edition

* Any deadline that falls on a Saturday or Sunday is automatically extended to Monday.

** Our first practitioner survey is for the senior IP practitioners, especially the IP Stars. We contact the Rising Stars after we have closed the senior IP practitioner survey. We can contact referees at any time between December and March, and we'll first process documents submitted on time, i.e. between September 1 and October 31. Our emails are sent from our general research email address (see here) or the email address of one of our editors.

Russia and Ukraine

We are deeply saddened to see the destruction of lives and property in Ukraine and the displacement of millions of its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine, including its IP community.

Managing IP has decided to suspend its research and publication of research content for Russia and Ukraine until further notice. We will, however, continue to accept submissions from firms in Ukraine. We pray for peace and a swift end to the war.

About IP STARS

Managing IP published its first legal directory in 1994 and rebranded it in 2013 as IP STARS. The IP STARS guide has expanded over the years and now covers over six IP practice areas and more than 70 jurisdictions, making it the most comprehensive, leading specialist rankings publication for the IP profession.

Research methodology

The research for our rankings is conducted rigorously and impartially by our team of research analysts in London, New York, and Hong Kong. Each year, we request information from thousands of firms, IP practitioners and their clients through interviews, email, and online surveys.
