Axel is European Patent Attorney and European Patent Litigator and has vast IP experience from private practice and in-house counselling in the pharmaceutical industry. Axel’s technical expertise includes pharmaceuticals, medical devices, microbiology, general chemistry, and environmental engineering. Axel’s mother tongue is German, and he is also fluent in Danish and English. Axel is extraordinarily experienced in opposition and appeal cases before the European Patent Office, and also acts as technical and patent law adviser in court cases pertaining to infringement and invalidity in Denmark and Germany. In 2023, Axel became a European Patent Litigator and is ready to represent clients before the UPC, and he is also qualified to act as court-appointed expert in Danish court cases. After obtaining a master’s degree in geo-ecology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, in 2003, Axel moved to Denmark to study at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Here, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in 2007, studying anaerobic processes of pollutant-degrading microorganisms in groundwater, including bacteria degrading/converting chlorinated hydrocarbons and arsenic compounds. Following a brief post-doctoral period, Axel switched to IP practice in Danish patent law firms. Axel returned to Germany in 2011, working as an in-house counsel at Fresenius Kabi Deutschland GmbH. In 2018, Axel joined some of his former colleagues to become Partner at COPA, where he is in charge of the German office registered in Munich.
