ZBM Patents & Trademarks was founded in 2003 with the goal of changing the patent landscape in Spain and is now playing in the league of high-ranked European patent law firms, serving multinational clients from Europe, the USA and other regions. ZBM is proud to have decisively contributed to set the new standard for quality patent practice in Spain.

The firm has grown considerably from its creation and has an outstanding team of patent experts with scientific backgrounds over the whole range of technical fields from life sciences to chemistry, electronics, software and mechanics. They acquire an in-depth understanding of clients’ technologies and endeavour to provide tailored advice to clients, taking account of their individual business needs.

Most of ZBM’s experts are qualified European patent attorneys (EPAs), many of them are also qualified as European Patent Litigators at the Unified Patent Court (UPC Litigators). Our team also includes a number of lawyers who are experts in trademarks and technology transfer. We also have Spanish patent and trademark attorneys and authorized representatives before EUIPO. Besides our exceptional prosecution department counts on the largest number of professionals in Spain with the European patent administration certification (EPAC) of the European Patent Office.

The commitment to quality at ZBM is relentless: its attorneys believe that something is not worth doing if it is not done well. Whether the job is patent drafting, prosecution work, opposition, trademark negotiations or just validations, all work products are cross-checked to ensure that they are of consistent high quality.

Indeed, the firm's outstanding quality has been acknowledged both nationally and internationally from the beginning and ZBM is the only Spanish firm that has been listedin the top tier for patent prosecution by Managing Intellectual Property every year since 2007. ZBM has also been nominated several times by the same entity as the Firm of the Year in patent prosecution Spain.

Clients also recognise ZBM’s excellent value for money, and client recommendations have become its major source of growth as small and medium-sized enterprises, multinationals, research institutions, patent firms and lawyers increasingly find their way to ZBM from the United States, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

The services offered by the firm in the patents field include patentability and freedom-to-operate analysis, carried out by attorneys who are highly trained in searching as former Chemical Abstracts and STN trainers and managers of scientific information of some of ZBM's experts; drafting of patent applications adapted to the main jurisdictions including Europe, the USA and Japan; patent prosecution worldwide and in particular at the European Patent Office, for both domestic and international clients, with the firm's attorneys always aiming to provide sound strategic advice in each step of prosecution; oppositions and appeals at the European Patent Office, in which our attorneys have been achieving remarkable results even in complex cases; patent litigation in Spain, where several of ZBM’s professionals regularly act as technical experts and have been involved in the Spanish leg of several pan-European litigation cases.

ZBM's trademark work is continuously growing in volume. ZBM's lawyers offer effective legal and strategic advice in relation with all aspects of trademark law and practice, including for example prosecution, oppositions and negotiations, with a particular focus in the European Union, Spain and Latin America.

ZBM also provides services in other IP fields such as designs, trade secrets, copyright, unfair competition or domain names.

Finally, the BConnect unit of ZBM that was created a few years ago is working very well. This unit provides services in technology transfer (patent commercialisation), licensees search, support in ongoing licensing negotiations, contract draft (consortium agreements, confidentiality, material transfer agreement (MTA), licensing), support and collaboration in R&D projects.
