James R. Batchelder is a first-chair trial attorney and a member of Ropes & Gray's governing Policy Committee. He was previously the managing partner of Ropes & Gray's Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices and a co-chair of the firm's technology, media and telecommunications group. He has over 27 years of experience representing some of the world's top technology companies. He litigates high-stakes IP cases in district courts, the US International Trade Commission, and the PTO's Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Batchelder is continually recognized as a leading practitioner for IP litigation by publications including Chambers, Benchmark Litigation, Best Lawyers in America, Legal 500, IAM Patent 1000, Managing Intellectual Property and Super Lawyers California. He was also named as one of California's Top Intellectual Property Lawyers by The Daily Journal.
Mr. Batchelder frequently speaks and publishes on IP issues and regularly lectures on IP strategy topics including "The Real World Impact of Recent Supreme Court Patent Decisions," "Best Patent Practices," "Insisting That Trolls Play Fair," and "Patent Challenges at the USPTO: What You Need to Know to Make Effective Use of Post-Grant Challenges," at such venues as the University of California Berkeley School of Law, Stanford University and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
