Founded in 1922, Cades Schutte is a highly respected full-service Hawaii firm employing 70-plus attorneys between its Honolulu and Big Island offices. With about 10 attorneys incorporating varying degrees of patent, trademark, and copyright matters into their practices, the firm is among the most active in the state in terms of intellectual property. Colin Miwa has successfully represented a number of notable clients with respect to trademark infringement actions. Martin Hsia leads the IP group and is one of the few registered patent attorneys in Hawaii. While working for the Office of Technology Assessment in Washington DC, he was involved in the creation of the PTAB. Among his achievements, he was the first to obtain a patent for tasteless smoke, which is used to preserve seafood. Recently, he obtained a patent on a novel MRI machine that, unlike most, doesn't require the patient to stay still.
